This module introduces the most important definitions related to satellite communications (SatCom). It also gives a historical context of SatCom development. You’ll learn about the architecture of a SatCom system with its key components, and discover both benefits and drawbacks of satellite communications. In addition, various SatCom services are depicted, followed by short descriptions of a broad rage of SatCom users. This module also presents standardisation and regulatory bodies which are responsible for the allocation of global radio spectrum and satellite orbits, and the development of technical standards to ensure that networks and technologies interconnect seamlessly. This is followed by the description of a satellite value chain, which permits the delivery of any space-based services that rely on satellite technology.
